Q&A: What is your definition of gentleness and peace in your life?

Question by SCC: What is your definition of gentleness and peace in your life?
In the Christian faith, one of the virtues is gentleness. How can we show gentleness in our lives and our walk with God? The same goes for peace. I’m not talking about what you expect out of others, but in your own life, how do you show gentleness and peace?

For those of other beliefs, what is your opinion about gentleness and peace and how would you exemplify it?

Philippians 4:4-6 (NIV)
4Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

There are no gods. Peace in my life comes from an understanding of the world. I don’t know everything about the world, but I know enough to understand, in general, how it works. I’m also content to admit those things I don’t know about the world.

Some people don’t seem as content. They like to make up stuff about the world when they lack answers. They don’t know how the universe started, so they say “God did it”. That’s a made up answer, and it belies an underlying insecurity about the world.

To me, that’s not real peace. Peace comes from accepting what you know and what you don’t know, not making up stories to cover your ignorance.

Gentleness comes from having the same understanding about the people around you. When you realize that everybody around you has pretty much the same life as you, you are more willing to put yourself in their shoes and be gentler to them. Some like to comparmentalize people into small groups, such as the various religious groups. Again, that tends to belie an insecurity. It’s more honest to treat people as they actually are, humans trying to live their lives. That honesty about the nature of people instills a compassion towards others as you include them in the larger group of humanity.
